SUMMARY:Food & Identity: A taste of Puerto Rico with Eric Rivera
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nJoin us for an evening of food and discussion with Eric Rivera\, Executive Chef at Seattle’s Bookstore Bar & Café. Eric\, a graduate of the culinary school at the Art Institute of Seattle\, traces cooking back to when he was a small child. Growing up in a Puerto Rican family that celebrated food\, Eric often cooked with his grandfather. Despite his early connection with the kitchen\, Eric pursued jobs in mortgage and insurance. But eventually he found himself drawn back to food. \nAfter years of working his way up the culinary ladder\, his new job at Bookstore Bar & Cafe\, allows him to play to his guests’ sense of discovery. “It’s an exploration of the whole flavor spectrum\, where you can go from sweet to savory to sour in one bite\,” he says. “We have all these great local ingredients at our disposal\, and we’ll be highlighting flavors of the Pacific Northwest – but in a way that will feel fresh and new to locals and visitors alike.” \nOver a traditional Puerto Rican meal prepared by Eric\, we will discuss how we can learn about ourselves and one another through food\, and how building bridges through food. During the meal we will break out in small group discussions and play with the magic of food and storytelling to connect us in our vulnerability and shared humanity. \nThe Menu: \n– Bacalao \n– Tostones \n– Arroz con gandules \n– Mofongo \n– Bistec \n– Lechon \n– Tembleque \n– Arroz Con Leche \nTickets are $39.85 per person \n35 tickets available

DESCRIPTION:Join hundreds of friends and neighbors at our annual spring Duwamish Alive! event along the Duwamish Shoreline behind BECU in Tukwila! \nAt the Duwamish Shoreline\, we will be removing some invasive weeds that are choking out native plants and spreading mulch to continue to bring this location back to its former glory! While you’re here\, keep an eye out for otter\, osprey and other wildlife making their home along the river’s edge. Boots or comfortable athletic shoes\, work clothes\, appropriate layers for rain and sun (including sunscreen). Volunteers should also bring a refillable water bottle; snacks and lunch will be provided\, so make sure to stick around! \nRestoration training\, tools and gloves will also be provided. No experience necessary\, so make sure to bring along your friends\, family\, and neighbors! \nYouth volunteers: If you are under 18 and attending the event without a parent or guardian\, please come to the event with a Youth Waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Youth Waiver for Forterra Restoration Events can be found here. \nForterra is a proud partner of the Duwamish Alive Coalition\, which is a collaborative effort of local communities\, municipalities\, non-profits and businesses within the Duwamish River Watershed to preserve and enhance habitat for people and wildlife towards improving the health of the Puget Sound.  The Coalition works to improve the ecological health of our watershed through community engagement and volunteer-based habitat restoration.

SUMMARY:City Farming and Food Access Focus of New Summit
DESCRIPTION:Free and Open to All\nMarch 17\, 2017: 2–5 p.m.\nMarch 18\, 2017: 10 a.m.–3 p.m.\nHighline’s main campus\, Building 8 \nA mother goat with her new kid are likely to steal the show at the South King County Urban Agriculture Food Summit. \nIn its inaugural year\, the free summit is open to all who want to learn about growing food and farming in the city. The two-day event will feature workshops\, demonstrations\, vendors and children’s activities. \nAttendees will learn about permaculture/sustainability techniques\, soil science\, beekeeping for increased pollination\, edible landscaping and more. \n \nGoats\, like this doe and kid\, will be part of the goat-keeping demonstration at the Urban Agriculture Food Summit. The goat visit will not be a first for Highline. The college brings goats to campus at least once a year as an environmentally friendly way to keep blackberry bushes in check. \n\n“The goal of the summit is to support\, develop and promote new energy for urban agriculture in south King County\,” said Rick Shultz\, who is one of the event organizers and advises the Highline College Permaculture Club. \n \nRick Shultz \n\nShultz noted that the new summit\, as well as Highline’s Urban Agriculture/Food Security program in general\, gives the college and its community partners the ability to increase awareness and opportunities to develop urban agriculture in a region of King County that is recognized as a food desert. \nSeveral outside organizations are participating in the two-day event. Ravenna Ridge Metro Milkers will bring goats to demonstrate urban goat keeping\, and the Seattle Tree Fruit Society will present its 12th annual grafting show\, with many fruit growing–related workshops. \n \nBobby Butler \n\n“I am excited to be partnering with King Conservation District and the Seattle Tree Fruit Society for this event. Both organizations are wonderful resources for folks in the community who are interested in growing their own food and learning more about sustainable practices\,” said Bobby Butler\, who along with Shultz is organizing the summit. Butler manages Highline’s Urban Agriculture program. \n“I am hoping that this event will give members of the community the motivation and guidance they need to get their garden or farm off and running this spring. The event will also be a great opportunity for people to get to know about some of the wonderful food-based organizations that are here to serve their community.” \nIn 2015\, Highline was awarded a two-year\, $80\,000 grant from the King Conservation District (KCD) Regional Food System program to help launch its Urban Agriculture/Food Security program. \nThe KCD grant program was initiated to serve as a catalyst for making local food production environmentally and economically sustainable. It funds projects that contribute to the economic viability of local farmers\, encourage new farmers\, expand acreage in food production\, improve food access and increase demand for King County farm products. \nQuestions?\nBobby Butler: (206) 592-3985\, bbutler@highline.edu\nRick Shultz: (206) 592-4117\, rshultz@highline.edu
